It’s been said that (acting) improv is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. (See how handy passive tense can be? It hides the fact that I’m the one who said it. Um, well, it did hide the fact.)

I have yet to find strong evidence of improv in Ashland or even Medford. (Of course, my not finding it does not mean it’s not there.)

This lack of improv has made me realize two things very vividly:

1) I really miss the great access to improv classes (and performances) I had in Bellingham. I see now what a huge benefit it is to that city to have even one, let alone two strong improv schools.

2) It is possible to go into improv withdrawal. So far the physical symptoms seem to be minor. Or it could be more of a psychological thing. Either way, I’m starting to worry that I may have to try to get the cats to improvise with me

For those of you fortunate enough to have improv classes in your town, I strongly encourage you to give it a shot — even if you don’t want to “perform” or if you feel you’re too shy, not funny, or whatever.

I had no goal of performing when I started, yet I kept going to class for nearly five years because it was so fun to do, and so freeing. Just being in the class was entertaining because I was around other people who were also there playing and having fun. And I’d often laugh so hard my face hurt after.

Really, one might almost say it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

If you know of any improv classes, groups or even companies around Ashland Oregon, please let me know!

    Hello there!

So I’m new to Ashland and did a google search trying to find local improv, and boom! Your blog popped up!

So I’m curious, have you found any improv here? I was active in the Denver improv scene before moving here…as an improviser and as a photographer. Would love to play in Ashland if there’s anything going on.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Amanda. I DID find improv in Ashland! I started by contacting The Hamazons via their website and it just so happened that one of the members was starting up an improv class shortly after I contacted them.

By going to the class, I met other people interested in improv and was just getting an improv group going there before I moved away (to Bend, OR).

As far as I know, that group has still been meeting. I’ll pass your email address on to some of my contacts there, if that’s okay. I would think you should be able to hook up with something there.
